Why Typography Is the Most Underrated Element of Brand Design*
Logos get all the attention. But typography — the fonts you choose and how you use them — does more heavy lifting for your brand identity than almost anything else.

The Invisible Workhorse
Ask most business owners about their brand and they'll talk about their logo. Ask them about their typography and you'll often get a blank stare. Yet typography accounts for the majority of what audiences actually read — and read into — about a brand.
Type Communicates Before Words Do
Before a reader processes a single word, the shape of the letterforms is already communicating. A condensed bold sans-serif says something very different to a flowing italic serif. The spacing between letters, the size relationships between headings and body text, the way lines break — all of it contributes to a personality that readers absorb unconsciously.
Serif vs Sans-Serif: A Tired Debate
The old rule — serifs for print, sans-serifs for screen — is largely obsolete at modern screen resolutions. What matters more is:
- Legibility at size: Does it read clearly at 8pt in a printed footnote?
- Personality alignment: Does the typeface feel right for your brand's character?
- System cohesion: Does your display font work harmoniously with your body font?
In Print, Typography Is Everything
On screen, bad typography can be rescued by interactivity, motion, and attention-grabbing elements. In print, there's nowhere to hide. A poorly chosen font on a business card or brochure sits there, static and permanent, telling the wrong story.
Hierarchy matters acutely in print. Headlines need to pull the eye. Subheads need to guide it. Body text needs to hold it. Get the sizing, weight, and spacing wrong and the whole piece falls apart — regardless of how good the photography or layout might be.
Our Recommendation
Invest in a proper type pairing — at minimum a display/heading font and a body font that work together. And always, always test type choices on printed proofs before committing. Screen previews are not reliable type judges.
For brand identity projects, we always specify type as part of the system — not just the fonts, but the hierarchy, spacing and scale relationships that make a brand feel coherent in print.
