The Death of the Argos Catalogue: What Print Lost the Day a Legend Died*
For 47 years, the Argos catalogue was the most thumbed publication in Britain. When it was killed off in 2020, it wasn't just a business decision — it was the end of a cultural institution.

Britain's Favourite Book
At its peak, the Argos catalogue was printed in runs of 90 million copies per year. That's more than the King James Bible. More than any novel. More than almost any other printed object in the history of British publishing. It was — by any measure — the most widely read document in the country.
And in January 2020, Argos announced it was gone. Forever.
The Catalogue as Cultural Artefact
For generations of British children, the Argos catalogue wasn't a shopping tool — it was a wish book. Every Christmas, kids would circle items in biro, fold corners, and present dog-eared pages to parents like a formal procurement request. It was ritual. It was tactile. It was print doing something that no website has ever replicated.
The catalogue was also a masterclass in information design. Over 1,000 pages, thousands of products, complex navigation, and yet — somehow — people could find things. The numbered grid system, the product codes, the index. It was UX before UX was a thing.
The Business Case That Killed It
Digital killed the catalogue's ROI, not its relevance. Printing and distributing 90 million copies is an enormous cost. When customers migrated online, the catalogue became harder to justify on a spreadsheet — even as many shoppers still used it to browse before buying digitally.
Argos tried. They reduced frequency. They went smaller. But the economics of mass print distribution in a digital age are brutal.
What Print Can Learn From It
The Argos catalogue's demise teaches us something important: print's superpower is not information delivery — it's experience. The brands thriving in print today understand this. They're producing fewer pieces, but making them extraordinary. Luxury paper stocks. Spot UV. Foil. Tactile covers that make you want to pick them up.
The catalogue is dead. Long live intentional print. If you'd like to produce print worth keeping — from premium brochures to foil-finished stationery — talk to us about your next commercial print project.
