Inside the Print Press: How Commercial Offset Printing Actually Works*
Offset lithography has been the backbone of commercial print for over a century. It's fast, consistent, and produces quality that digital printing still struggles to match at scale.

The Machine That Prints the World
Most of the print you interact with daily — magazines, brochures, packaging, books — was produced on an offset lithographic press. It's a technology developed in the late 19th century that has been refined to extraordinary levels of precision and speed. Modern offset presses can print 15,000 sheets per hour, each one virtually identical to the last.
The Core Principle
Offset printing relies on a beautifully simple chemical principle: oil and water don't mix. Image areas on the printing plate are treated to attract oil-based ink. Non-image areas are treated to attract water and repel ink. The plate never touches the paper directly — ink transfers first to a rubber 'blanket' cylinder, then onto the stock. This is the 'offset' in offset printing.
CMYK in Practice
Standard offset printing uses four ink stations — Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. Each colour is printed in a precise dot pattern at a different angle. Viewed up close, you see the dots. Viewed normally, your eye blends them into continuous tone. This is called halftone printing, and it's how virtually all full-colour printed matter is produced.
When Offset Beats Digital
- Volume: Cost per unit drops dramatically as quantity increases. For runs over 1,000, offset is almost always more economical.
- Colour consistency: Pantone spot colours can be matched precisely. Critical for brand-sensitive work.
- Stock range: Offset handles a wider range of paper weights and substrates than most digital presses.
- Special inks: Metallics, fluorescents, and varnishes integrate naturally into the offset workflow.
