Sustainable Print: How the Industry Is Getting Serious About the Environment*
Print has a reputation as an environmental villain. The reality in 2024 is far more nuanced — and the industry's progress on sustainability is genuinely impressive.

Challenging the Assumption
Digital is green, print is not — that's the received wisdom. But the picture is more complicated than the narrative suggests. Digital infrastructure consumes enormous amounts of energy. Data centres, device manufacturing, streaming services — the carbon footprint of the digital economy is vast and largely invisible.
Meanwhile, print has been quietly undergoing a sustainability revolution.
What's Changed
FSC Certification
The Forest Stewardship Council certification guarantees that paper comes from responsibly managed forests. FSC-certified stock is now standard across most professional print suppliers, and the chain-of-custody documentation provides real accountability.
Vegetable and Water-Based Inks
Petroleum-based inks have been progressively replaced by vegetable-oil and water-based alternatives in many applications. These reduce VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions significantly during the print process.
Waste Reduction Technology
Modern digital print-on-demand means zero overstock. You print what you need, when you need it. No pallets of outdated brochures heading to landfill.
Carbon-Neutral Print Services
Several print suppliers now offer carbon-offset programmes, funding tree planting or renewable energy projects to offset the residual emissions of your print job.
The Most Sustainable Print Job
Is one that's planned properly. Over-ordering is the single biggest source of print waste. Work with your printer to forecast accurately, choose environmentally certified stocks, and design for longevity rather than disposability.
Print, done thoughtfully, can be part of a genuinely responsible brand strategy. If you'd like to explore sustainable stock and finishing options for your next commercial print project, we're happy to talk through what's available.
